Hi there! My name is Hilary and I’m the writer and photographer behind Cocoa Bean, The Vegetable. On this blog we explore all kinds of delicious food, as well as make a conscious effort to make local and sustainable selections. I’m in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, where we are one of the biggest producers of maple syrup and cranberries, so you can be sure to find some recipes that incorporate them! Can you find them all? 🙂
You will notice that my recipes are categorized by season, based on what’s delicious and supremely fresh in my region. I hope you will try to eat with the seasons too!
I aim to produce original recipes that are 100% realistic and feasible for any home cook. There is a good balance of easy starter recipes, as well as satisfying challenges for some of you well-versed cooks out there!
When I created this blog back in 2012, I named it Cocoa Bean, The Vegetable. The cocoa plant is a vegetable, isn’t it? 🙂 The name of my blog stems from my childhood when I had a raging sweet tooth. My charmingly devilish Aunt would tell me that eating my chocolate cake was like eating vegetables, as chocolate was made from the cocoa bean. I just loved that, and it stuck with me ever since (although my notion of what constitutes a vegetable has since evolved).
